LEAK SANDWICH 100 COMPACT LOUDSPEAKER ADDED TO CLASSIC RANGE

LEAK has introduced the LEAK Sandwich 100, a compact standmount loudspeaker that joins the recently relaunched Sandwich range.

Following the reintroduction of LEAK Sandwich 150 and Sandwich 250 in 2024, the new model is designed as a smaller and more affordable option while retaining the core design principles of the series.

BACKGROUND TO THE LEAK SANDWICH DESIGN

The Sandwich name dates back to 1961, when LEAK developed a loudspeaker cone using a layered construction of materials to improve stiffness and reduce distortion. This approach addressed issues common to conventional cone materials, such as unwanted resonance and loss of control. The design became a notable part of British HiFi history and has been revisited in the brand’s recent products.

LEAK SANDWICH 100 LOUDSPEAKERS

The LEAK Sandwich 100 takes the same underlying driver technology used in the larger models and packages it into a more compact cabinet. It is intended for use in smaller listening environments where the physical size of the Sandwich 150 and 250 may be less practical.

DRIVER AND CONE TECHNOLOGY

At the core of the design is a 150mm mid/bass driver featuring a modern version of the Sandwich cone. This uses an aluminium skin bonded to a layer of Rohacell structural foam, a material commonly used in aerospace applications due to its strength-to-weight properties. The aim is to maintain rigidity while keeping the cone lightweight, helping to reduce distortion and improve accuracy.

The driver is paired with a 30mm textile dome tweeter, which is larger than typical in this category. According to LEAK, this allows for lower crossover points and improved power handling compared to similarly sized speakers.

CROSSOVER AND INTEGRATION

The crossover network uses polypropylene capacitors, air-core inductors and low-loss resistors. These components are arranged to manage phase alignment between the drivers and maintain consistent performance both on and off axis. The goal is stable stereo imaging and balanced tonal response across different listening positions.

CABINET DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

The enclosure combines multiple layers of materials, including MDF and high-density particle board, bonded together to control resonance. Internal bracing and damping materials are also used to reduce unwanted vibrations. A rear-facing port supports low-frequency extension.

Externally, the speaker features a walnut veneer cabinet with aluminium detailing and a black front baffle, referencing the aesthetic of earlier LEAK designs while updating it for contemporary systems.

LEAK SANDWICH 100 POSITIONING IN THE RANGE

The addition of the LEAK Sandwich 100 broadens the Sandwich series by offering a smaller and more accessible model alongside the existing 150 and 250 versions. It continues the brand’s recent focus on combining heritage-inspired design with modern materials and engineering.

LEAK SANDWICH 100 SPECIFICATIONS OVERVIEW

The LEAK Sandwich 100 is a two-way, bass reflex standmount loudspeaker with a sensitivity of 86dB and nominal impedance of 6 ohms. Recommended amplifier power is rated between 25 and 100 watts, and bass extension is quoted at 44Hz (-6dB). The cabinet measures 340 x 210 x 250mm.

LEAK SANDWICH 100 PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

The LEAK Sandwich 100 is available from mid-April, priced at £499 per pair.

HiFi PiG says: A cool looking and affordable pair of speakers with a great history.
